Can you spare 15 minutes right now? Even if I say it's really important? Would you do it if I told you it could change your life,
make you look better,
give you more energy and
solve all your problems?
Now that I have your attention - I better come clean - What I have to say really can give you all those things. Except for the last one, unless I add in one word - postpartum - before the problems. (okay, and take away "all" because no-one's perfect). Now that you're reading and you know I'll tell it to you straight, let's talk about 15 minutes.
What do you regularly spend 15 minutes on? I know I can waste 15 min easily on my phone seeing what everyone else is up to, 15 min waiting to pick someone up or drop them off, 15 min waiting at the checkout stand at the grocery store. I also spend 15 min on things I think are really important, like reading with my 8 year old, taking a shower and doing the dishes (I said important - not necessarily fun). What is sure is that for every 15 min of things a mother would like to do - she has a list 3 pages long of 15 minute tasks that she needs to do or that she feels guilty because she hasn't done.
Instead of looking your 3 page list and feeling overwhelmed, (If you have a list of things you need to do - you're ahead of the pack) follow these three steps to get productive spending your time on those things that will make the most difference.
1. Prioritize it - I know your list is a mile long but just pick 3 goals that you feel are the most important for this year or week or day. These three things may fall into the categories of work, family, self, just to help you narrow it down. Your list just got shorter.
2. Break it down - Now you have your goal - break it down by asking yourself - How am I going to accomplish this? Think of simple weekly or daily tasks. For example, Lisa signed up for the Mommy Ready program this January to accomplish her goal of getting into shape the right way - by first restoring her core function. The Mommy Ready program already helps walk Lisa through her goals each phase. She plans to spend 15 min on her exercises 5 days/week, review her phase on the 6th day and rest on the 7th.
3. Schedule it - With all the things a mom has to remember, don't make this one more of them. Schedule it in your calendar, set your alarm, establish your trigger - do what it takes to make each of those daily/weekly tasks the priority that week.
Now for the rest of your list - if it's important it's going to happen, but what you can be sure of is that these top 3 goals you've set this year will definitely happen. So pat yourself on the back and get started today - right now.
If you had 15 min to read this - you can find another 15 min to make your plan. So, the next time you pick up your phone to check on everyone else, lay it down and do your exercises. The next time you are waiting for someone sit/stand up straight and do your core system contractions. Tonight before bed, spend 15 minutes to reach your goals. And in the morning, first thing - do the same.
